In my first post we spoke about what a domain name is and why domain name registration is important. So what more is there to domain name registration you might ask?
Lets continue with how to find an available domain name. It does not help that you pick this brilliant name that everyone will remember and will be easy to spell, if the name you picked is already in use!
Step 1: Pick an appropriate name (Remember to keep it as short as possible and as easy to spell)
Step 2: Type the address in your web browser. If it shows a website then you are out of luck as that name is already registered. At this stage you need to return to step 1. If an error page is displayed then chances are that the chosen name is not in use.
Step 3: At this stage you can contact your web hosting company and purchase the domain name that you have chosen.
This brings me to my next point. Web hosting!
domain names need a home. This home is a computer on the internet that provides hard drive space for your web site. When someone types in your domain name it points to the computer that is hosting your web site. This space needs to be rented! The cost of this hosting can vary as it depends on the features or options that you would like to go with your hosting account.
I will go into more details on internet hosting in my next post.
